A Compliment From a Giant Teddy Bear

Shannon reminded me a bit of Jupiter Jones from The Three Investigators, the pre-adolescent detective novels I read as a child. “Jupe” was always somewhat touchy about his weight, given that his choice word to describe his body was “stocky.” The common physique was where the similarities ended, though; Shannon never gave the impression that his weight bothered him. He wouldn’t have been considered fat, per se, but he was a bigger guy. Aside from their clothing – Shannon was very much a t-shirt and jeans guy, while Jupe was more business casual – Shannon was also built exactly as I would have pictured Jupe as an adult: stocky, bald and bearded. What, Me Worry?

I’m worried about my son.

He’s fine, first of all. He’s totally healthy, hitting all his developmental milestones on time and growing up way too fast. He’s not violent or oppositional or hard to manage. He throws tantrums here and there when he gets upset, just like any typical two-year-old would, but even those instances are just because he’s still learning how to cope with the tragedies of not getting his way.  Continue reading “What, Me Worry?”

Musical Notes

I had a friend in college who had the ability to guess the kind of music that a person liked with remarkable accuracy. We were in an a capella group together1 and we went on a few road trips to sing at other schools. On one such trip, each of her passengers rotated picking the “soundtrack.” When each person chose a CD from her massive catalog she was able to guess the genre, and sometimes, the exact album that the person had picked. I wasn’t so impressed when she said that a friend of ours had picked Aretha Franklin; frankly, that was a pretty easy one if you knew the girl. But I’ll admit, I was kind of surprised when she said, quite confidently, that I would choose something in the alternative/hard rock vein. She had nailed it; I was holding Live’s “Throwing Copper.”  Continue reading “Musical Notes”

Strep Throat Can Be Good For You

I’ve written a number of times about my admiration for the work my wife puts into being a parent. She’s home with E every day, feeding him, playing with him, cleaning him up, cleaning up after him, making sure he doesn’t set the apartment on fire1 and everything else a mom needs to do. She does an amazing job, even when she’s not feeling her best.

Which brings me to last week.

You might have noticed that’s it’s been about two weeks since I published my last post. The first week was just really busy with work, as I had to prepare a presentation for the entire department, in addition to my usual responsibilities of home visits and other paperwork.  Last week was a little different, though. T wasn’t feeling well on Monday evening and woke up Tuesday morning with a fever above 103, so I took a personal day to look after E and let her recover a bit.  Continue reading “Strep Throat Can Be Good For You”
